Warwickshire street light switch-off could save £500,000

Plans to turn off street lights in parts of Warwickshire have been announced by the county council in a bid to cut costs.

The local authority said some 39,000 lights could be switched off between midnight and 05:30, saving about £500,000 a year.

The plans are also expected to cut the council's carbon emissions.

It added that lights in locations such as roundabouts and pedestrian crossings would remain on.

The Conservative-controlled council said it had consulted with the police and community groups to identify other locations that would be excluded from the plans because of safety concerns.

Lights in areas covered by permanent CCTV cameras would also remain on.

Street lights operated by parish, town, district or borough councils would not be part of the proposals.

A public consultation has begun and a full list of streets included in the plans have been published on the council's website.
