Neo-natal ward visiting restricted at University Hospital in Coventry

Visiting at a Coventry neo-natal ward has been temporarily restricted after three babies tested positive for an infection which can cause colds.

New admissions to the unit at University Hospital have also been suspended temporarily as a precaution.

Parents can visit, but siblings and extended family members have been asked not to go to the unit.

ParaInfluenza Virus 3 does not usually cause harm in healthy adults or children, the hospital said.

But it added that babies being treated in the unit were more susceptible.

The situation is being reviewed on a daily basis and a deep clean of the unit and its equipment has been taking place.

Chief nurse at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust Mark Radford said: "We apologise to anyone affected but hope they understand that this decision is taken as a precautionary measure so that vulnerable babies are not put at risk."
