Olympic traffic messages on electronic signs in Coventry have been changed after they had advised motorists to avoid the area.

The City of Coventry Stadium, home to Coventry City FC, is hosting 12 Olympic football matches from Wednesday.

A city council spokesman said the message on the temporary signs was supposed to say "avoid A444".

The error was spotted last week and the wording was due to be corrected on Monday, according to the spokesman.

They said that live traffic signage at all Olympic venues was the responsibility of a company working for Olympic organisers Locog.

Gary Ellam, from Solar Signs UK, the company that owns the signs, said: "Our signs were telling people to 'avoid area' because we were told to put that on.

"I must admit it did seem a bit odd."

No parking will be available at the on-site car parks for matches, and organisers have urged drivers to use parking elsewhere or free shuttle buses.
