Coventry City's original ticket allocation sold out on Monday

Coventry City's play-off final clash at Wembley will not be shown on a big screen in the city centre because of safety concerns, the council says.

"Demand is likely to outstrip any capacity we could offer in the city centre," the city council said.

The Sky Blues are set to face Luton Town in the Championship play-off on Saturday.

Earlier, 500 extra tickets were released after the original allocation of 36,237 sold out on Monday.

They quickly sold out, although wheelchair positions were still available on Thursday afternoon.

Many fans who will not be able to attend the match had called for a big screen.

'Fans come together'

However, the council said: "Organising any event at relatively short notice would always be challenging for logistical and licensing reasons. But, the overwhelming challenge would be safety.

"The safety of those attending must be the number one priority."

The authority made it clear there would be many hospitality venues in the city showing the game, "for fans to come together and watch the match".

"We hope Saturday is another glorious day for Coventry City FC and the Sky Blue Army and that the fans can cheer them all the way to the Premier League".

The extra tickets were released on Thursday because players, staff and sponsors, no longer needed them or were being seated elsewhere in the stadium.
