Coventry Building Society has said it will donate £1m to help those in need in the city for a second year.

The money will be given to schools, food banks, social supermarkets, youth groups and Citizens Advice.

Last year it donated £1m to help organisations help others with the cost of living crisis during the winter.

The society's 64 branches around the country will also give £1,000 to food banks.

From this year's £1m funding, £320,000 will go to schools and youth charities to support literacy and numeracy, £100,000 will be given to the charity Act on Energy to support those in fuel poverty and £88,000 will go to Coventry Citizens Advice to establish a Debt Academy for training new debt advisers.

Anna Cuskin, the society's corporate responsibility manager, said: "The support our partner schools and charity partners give the community is staggering, but demand for their services has rocketed.

"We've been working together to make sure any additional donation this year will not only make it easier for people to get the immediate help they need, but will also provide longer-term support that has a lasting effect."
