A group of gravestones have been shattered after a large tree fell to the ground. hitting the memorials below.

About 15 headstones are believed to have been damaged at the London Road Cemetery in the Cheylesmore area of Coventry.

It came as Storm Pia battered the country with strong winds on Thursday.

The affected section of the cemetery was cordoned off for public safety, the city council said.

Memorials were left strewn across the site, with a path completely blocked by debris.

The council said a tree specialist would be assessing the scene.

A spokesperson added: "Until debris removal is completed, a full evaluation of potential memorial damages is pending. We'll notify [relatives] about next steps and prioritise tree removal based on immediate risks."
