The father of a rugby player who could make his debut for England this weekend has described his excitement at the news.

Northampton Saints fly-half Fin Smith, from Warwick, was named on the bench for the country's opening Six Nations game against Italy.

His father, Andrew Smith, said he felt a "real mix of emotions" about his son playing international rugby.

"We are proud Scots but we are even prouder parents," he said.

Andrew Smith added that rugby had always been part of his family and he would always support Fin, no matter what team he played for.

Worcester debut

Smith, 21, made his Premiership debut for Worcester in 2021 as an 18-year-old before becoming a regular starter in the team during the 2021-22 season.

He joined Northampton Saints in October 2022 on a multi-year deal after Warriors went out of business.

He deputises for George Ford in Rome with Marcus Smith ruled out by injury.
