Mountain rescue volunteers joined forces with Cumbria firefighters for a rescue exercise on a frozen lake.

Many lakes and ponds have been covered with ice, prompting warnings from emergency services about the dangers of venturing onto them.

Members of the Cockermouth and Keswick rescue teams and crews from Cumbria fire and rescue service took part in a simulated rescue.

It involved a "casualty" who had fallen through the ice on Bassenthwaite Lake.

A spokesman from Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team said the exercise had been a chance to "exchange skills and expertise in ice rescue".

A new rescue inflatable was tested which had been purchased with funds raised by Cockermouth Chamber of Trade.
