New Carlisle Airport development plan submitted

Further plans for a development at Carlisle Airport have been submitted after original proposals were blocked by the Court of Appeal.

Stobart Air wants to create a freight distribution centre at the site.

Carlisle City Council gave the go-ahead but this was later overturned on the grounds that it should have ordered an environmental impact assessment first.

Resubmitted plans, for a warehouse and runway resurfacing, come with a 390-page environmental statement.

They no longer include a new passenger terminal.

Local people who held a meeting at the weekend have expressed concern that the warehouse would dominate the skyline.

There are also fears of an increase in heavy lorries.

Stobart Air has said that without the warehouse development the airport would not be commercially viable.

The move could safeguard 70 jobs and create 150 more, and contribute about £7m annually to the local economy.
