Work is due to begin on a new £6m primary school on Walney Island.
The development of Vickerstown Primary School begins on Monday on the site of the former council allotments on Mill Lane.
The project is part of a £12.8m investment programme in three primary schools in Barrow including Barrow Island and St George's schools.
A further £10m has been allocated to redevelop St Bernard's and Walney High Schools.
Duncan Fairbairn, Cumbria County Council cabinet member responsible for schools and education, said: "This work is the perfect illustration of our commitment to providing educational excellence in the Barrow area.
"The investment will reap dividends for learners in Barrow for generations to come."
