Cumbrian mother plans to donate kidney to baby son

A Cumbrian mother is planning to donate a kidney to her toddler son who was born with a rare condition.

Robson Mair's condition meant his windpipe was joined to his gullet, but the operation to correct it led to kidney failure.

The 19-month-old is fed through a tube which goes directly into his stomach.

His mother Lorraine then discovered she could be her son's organ donor. The family is hoping the operation will be completed in time for Christmas.

The operation will be carried out when Robson's weight reaches 10kg (22lbs).

Mrs Mair said: "I didn't even have to think about it. I know it sounds a bit bizarre but I would have given him my heart because he's so special."

Robson's condition means he has spent much of his life in hospital.

But Mrs Mair said the discovery that she could be the organ donor for her son had given her and her husband Keith hope for the future.

He said: "Words can't describe the last year-and-a-half after everything that we've been through already this is like another giant step but this is a step that should take us on the road to complete recovery hopefully."
