Cumbria traffic light improvements begin

Work to upgrade traffic lights at five busy locations in Cumbria has begun.

The four-week project will replace existing lights with new energy saving LED signals on the A590 between Ulverston and Lindal-in-Furness.

The lights will be more visible to drivers in sunny conditions and require less maintenance so they are cheaper to run.

The work will be carried out during the day between 09:30 and 16:00 GMT to avoid peak hours.

The traffic lights at the junctions with Victoria Road and Prince's Street on the A590 in Ulverston will all be upgraded, along with the lights at the pedestrian crossings at Swan Street in Ulverston, Swarthmoor and Lindal-in-Furness.

There will be some lane closures and temporary traffic and pedestrian crossing lights will be put in place so that people can continue to cross safely.

Andy Withington, the Highways Agency's service delivery manager, said: "There may be some delays for drivers while we carry out the work but there should be a long-term benefit, with the brighter lights helping to improve safety.

"The new LED lamps are also better for the environment and should help save taxpayers' money as they require less electricity."
