Extra grit for Cumbria parishes and district councils

On Thursday there were more than 100 road traffic incidents caused by freezing rain

Parishes and district councils across Cumbria are being offered extra grit and salt supplies to help combat the bad weather conditions.

With further risk of black ice on the county's roads, Cumbria County Council and Cumbria Highways agreed to provide extra supplies.

Communities can now carry out extra gritting themselves to keep roads and pavements as safe as possible.

It is the first time this winter the parish gritting scheme is being used.

The system was formally introduced in 2010 to boost resilience and help communities help themselves.

Councillor Tony Markley said: "We have acted quickly and decisively to try and counter the hazardous conditions and will work closely with local communities if they need more grit.

"It's a system that has worked well for the last two years and is a successful example of partnership working."

Further replenishment of the county's 10,000 grit bins and salt heaps will also be carried out as necessary.

People are also being advised to try to look out for and help their neighbours where possible, particularly those who are especially vulnerable such as the elderly and housebound.
