Clean up after Cumbria floods

A clean up has been taking place in Cumbria after heavy rain led to travel disruption and evacuations.

However, the Environment Agency has one flood warning in place for Keswick campsite.

Ulverston was badly affected on Thursday with residents of St Mary's Hospice forced to leave after water got into bedrooms.

Police advised drivers not to use the roads in the south of the county and rail services were cancelled.

Abbey flooded

Sue McGraw, director of the hospice, said the decision was taken to evacuate because of fears of a power cut.

"The water has come into the bedrooms and has flooded the offices," she said.

The road through Rickerby Park was closed after the River Eden flooded

She said they were hoping to get "back to normal" as soon as possible, but said it would be Monday "at the very earliest" as they need to assess the damage.

Furness Abbey, near Barrow, was also flooded during the heaviest rain on Thursday.

The main road through Rickerby Park in Carlisle was closed after the River Eden flooded.

Meanwhile Northern Rail said services had returned to normal in the Barrow area on Friday morning.

A further two flood alerts are in place - the lower level warning issued by the Environment Agency.
