A jetty in Cumbria, which helped boost lakeside visitor numbers, has won a design award.

The structure allowed larger steamer vessels to stop at Brockhole Visitor Centre, on the shores of Windermere.

A range of outdoor activities also opened in summer 2011, and both schemes are credited with more than doubling visitors to the attraction.

The jetty has now been honoured by the Landscape Institute for its "innovative and dynamic" architecture.

'World class'

The judges said: "The materiality of this project is exceptional and grounds the project in the sensitive environment.

"It is a progressive project for the profession in terms of concept and quality."

Bob Cartwright, from the Lake District National Park Authority, which runs the centre, said: "Seeing Brockhole move from 100,000 visitors to 230,000 visitors this year has been rewarding.

"This award also recognises that in the jetty we have a tangible example of world class visitor experience."
