Work begins to reduce road flooding on A595 in Cumbria

Almost £1m is to be spent on reducing the risk of flooding on one of Cumbria's busiest roads.

The cash will go on improving drainage on two sections of the A590 between Dalton-in-Furness and Ellscales.

The work, which began on Sunday, is expected to last six weeks and will involve some lane closures.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency, which will oversee the £940,000 scheme, said the work would result in "safer and more reliable journeys".

It involves replacing existing roadside kerb-drains with ones that can cope with higher volumes of water.
