Helvellyn death: David Barrow fell trying to aid friend

A man who died after falling almost 1,000ft (304m) from Helvellyn in the Lake District has been named.

David Barrow, 63, from Widnes in Cheshire, had gone to the aid of a friend, also from Widnes, who had himself fallen on Saturday.

But Mr Barrow lost his footing and fell. He was taken to hospital by mountain rescuers, but later died.

A third member of the party was unhurt and assisted off the mountain.

The death is the second on Helvellyn in the past week.

Martin Cotterell, from the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team, said: "One of the party slipped a short distance and then his friend went to go to his assistance and slipped even further.

"I think he must have fallen about 1,000 ft. It was a long way down.

"When we arrived on the scene and spoke to the injured man he seemed fine.

"But sadly he deteriorated while we were on the scene and when we got him to hospital he tragically died that evening."

Cumbria Police said Mr Barrow's family had been informed.

On 12 January, the body of a man from London was discovered after he had set off to climb the mountain.
