Swimmer drowns in Lake District

Windermere in Cumbria is the longest lake in England

A swimmer has drowned after getting into difficulty in the water in Windermere in the Lake District.

It happened on Saturday afternoon at Jenkins Field near Waterhead, at the northern end of the lake.

The 32-year-old man was flown by air ambulance to the Cumberland Infirmary, where he died shortly afterwards.

Staff from the nearby Low Wood water sports centre and Windermere Lake Cruises joined emergency services trying to save the man.
