A landslide-damaged railway line has had to be closed again a day after being partially reopened.

The Settle to Carlisle line had been shut after a section of embankment slipped into the River Eden near Appleby, Cumbria.

Services, which were running on one of two tracks, have now stopped altogether after further movement at Eden Brow.

Network Rail said the "line is likely to be shut for many weeks" while major repairs took place.

"Since movement of the embankment was first detected by aerial monitoring, we have had a team of experts on site to monitor conditions and to measure ground movement," route managing director Martin Frobisher said.

"This team measured significant movement of the embankment overnight."

Train services will run between Leeds and Appleby with buses between Appleby and Carlisle, Network Rail said.
