The one-year-old boy died in January

A woman has appeared in court charged with murdering a baby she wanted to adopt.

One-year-old Leiland Corkhill was living in Barrow, Cumbria, when he fell ill on 6 January and died the next day.

Laura Castle, 38, from Barrow, has been charged with murder and remanded in custody.

Scott Castle, 34, also from the town, has been charged with causing or allowing a person's death and was given conditional bail.

Both are also accused of child neglect and are due to appear before Preston Crown Court on Monday.

The child's death has been reviewed by an independent safeguarding expert, who was due to conclude a report by the autumn.

Cumbria County Council, which was responsible for the child's care, said publication would be subject to the conclusion of any criminal proceedings.
