A teenager has died in a fall while climbing in the Lake District.

Sami Ahmed, 15, from Bradford, was hiking with his family when he slipped and fell, his school said.

Mountain rescue volunteers were called to Dow Crag, near Coniston, at about 16:20 BST on Saturday to reports that a climber had suffered a head injury.

Michael Feely, principal at Dixon's City Academy, described the Year 10 student as "a fantastic young man who was kind, polite, and hardworking".

In a letter to families, the head teacher said: "He was the epitome of everything great about our community and was loved by students and staff.

"He was an excellent sportsman and always went out of his way to help others. We will miss him dearly."

The school is offering counselling and ongoing support to students.

Sami was winched aboard a coastguard helicopter but "tragically had not survived his fall", a spokesman for Coniston Mountain Rescue Team said.

A second person who had become "cragfast" was helped by other climbers and escorted down by the rescue team.

The mountain rescue spokesman said the team sent its "sincere condolences" to the family.

Mr Feely added: "In time, we will be working with Sami's family, friends, and teachers to consider how we want to remember Sami and the positive legacy he has left in our school.

"For now, our priority is to respond thoughtfully and sensitively to Sami's family and friends, ensuring they have the support they need."

The volunteer rescue team was called out four times on Saturday, with other incidents including two missing teenagers and a mother and son lost at the top of Old Man Coniston.
