Carlisle: Boy, 16, arrested after fireworks thrown in city centre

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested after fireworks were thrown in Carlisle city centre.

Cumbria Police said it was "aware" of youths that had thrown the fireworks on Saturday, adding it was "extremely dangerous".

A dispersal order has been put in place on Sunday until midnight, covering the city centre.

The boy, who was arrested on suspicion of attempted criminal damage, has been released under investigation.

The dispersal order gives police extra powers to be able to tell people to leave certain areas or risk being arrested.

'Causing distress'

Following several incidents in Bitts Park and the city centre on Saturday, 12 dispersal orders were issued to individuals to leave the area and not return.

Officers also carried out 13 stop searches, with one male found in possession of cannabis and a number of fireworks seized.

Insp Andy Leather, from the Carlisle neighbourhood policing team, said anti-social behaviour would "not be tolerated".

He said Saturday night "should have been a great evening" for the Carlisle community, which had been entertained with a fireworks display in Bitts Park.

"Fireworks are extremely dangerous and can cause serious harm if not used appropriately, we are aware some of the young people were using bangers which were still causing distress to members of the public in the town centre," he added.
