Lara-May's thoughtfulness left staff at the supermarket 'blown away'

A six-year-old girl who saved her pocket money to buy Christmas presents for other children has seen her donation double.

Lara-May, from Barrow-in-Furness, saved "every penny" given to her for a year so she could spend £300 on toys for children living in poverty.

Her donation has been matched by Morrisons, where she went to pick out the presents.

The supermarket said it was "blown away" by Lara-May's thoughtfulness.

She picked out a range of presents including teddies, Lego and a table-top pool table.

The gifts will be given out from 4 December by Project John, a charity that supports young people in Barrow.

Lara-May's mum, Shelley, said: "Lara-May has a great understanding of money and that not everyone is fortunate enough to receive presents at this time of year.

"She has been saving since last year to do all she can to make Christmas memorable for more children and we are so proud of how caring and selfless she is."

The six-year-old had previously said how sad she thought it was that some people "don't get any presents", adding that "it's not fair on them".

'An angel'

Nicola Kell, from Project John, said Lara-May had "touched the hearts" of many people.

"For a young child to spend her pocket money on Christmas toys - putting others' needs before her own - makes her an angel in my eyes.

"This just shows what a fantastic community we have when running local appeals, especially our Christmas appeal.

"This year we have received amazing support from our community."

Alison Jewitt, at Morrisons in Barrow-in-Furness, said: "When Lara-May came to our store, we were all blown away by her thoughtfulness.

"Helping those [who] need it most is a big part of our role as a community champion and we are glad to have... [matched] her generous donation."
