A major road in Cumbria has been closed in both directions due to a landslide, police have said.

It happened on the A592 Kirkstone Pass on Saturday, and the closure has been put in place for safety reasons.

Drivers have been advised to take an alternative route until the debris can be cleared, Cumbria Police added.

Westmorland and Furness Council said an assessment is taking place into how it happened, and to establish if works are needed before the road can be reopened.

A narrow stretch of the road recently under went council improvement works, which led to overnight closures for two weeks, external.

Further work is due to begin on 3 January.
