'Great escape' man unveils memorial plaque in Quarndon

A man who played his part in the "Great Escape" in World War II has unveiled a new commemorative plaque in the Derbyshire village where he lives.

The stainless steel plaque will replace one which has weathered badly over the past 89 years in Quarndon.

Commissioned by the parish council, it bears the names of 23 local servicemen who lost their lives.

Frank Stone said many of his friends and colleagues had died and it was important to honour them.

He said: "The memory of those people who sacrificed their lives should never be forgotten, I'm proud to have been associated with them."

Visitors from Northumberland, Lancashire, Cumbria, Essex, Hertfordshire and parts of Derbyshire attended the ceremony.

The memorial was consecrated by the Bishop of Repton, the Right Reverend Humphrey Southern.
