Shoppers queue to sign Bombardier petition

More than 3,000 people have signed a petition urging the government to reverse its decision to deny train-maker Bombardier a £1.4bn contract.

Chris Williamson, Labour MP for Derby North, organised the petition in Derby city centre, after the Thameslink deal went to German firm Siemens.

He said many signing the petition had friends and family employed there.

The government said Siemens offered "better value" but the decision could see Bombardier's Derby base shut.

Bombardier employs about 3,000 at its plant.

Mr Williamson, who has also written to the transport secretary, said he hoped to read the petition to parliament before its summer recess on 19 July.
