East Midlands Airport's runway turned into race track

East Midlands Airport's runway was transformed into a running track for a few hours for a charity event.

The runners took part in a 10km race at East Midlands Airport in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Organiser Anna Thomson said the run, organised by the Prince's Trust, had started at 03:00 BST when the runway was empty.

"We have been planning this since July and we wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't safe," she said.

All entrants were over 16 years old and capable of running the 10km race in less than 90 minutes.

The northern runway at Heathrow Airport played host to a 10km dash to raise money for a leukaemia charity in March 2006.

The Prince's Trust helps more than 4,000 young people across the East Midlands each year with job training and other skills.
