Borrowash residents holds vigil over street lighting cuts

A candlelit vigil has taken place in a Derbyshire village to raise awareness about council plans to switch off street lights to save money.

Residents in Borrowash said the vigil was in response to a county council consultation on turning off street lights between midnight and 05:30 GMT.

The Conservative-led authority said it was looking at turning off more than 60% of its 89,000 lights.

The council estimates it could save £400,000 on its energy bill.

It said its energy bills had increased from £1.87m in 2006/07 to £2.47m in 2010/11 and the move would also cut carbon emissions.

The vigil was held at 19:00 GMT on Wednesday at the Jubilee Clock in Borrowash.
