Chesterfield Canal project creates new mooring station in Staveley

A £575,000 restoration project at a Derbyshire canal will create a new mooring station for 20 canal boats.

Derbyshire County Council said the improvements, along with a new towpath, should increase tourism in the area.

The newly restored 500m (1,640ft) section of the Chesterfield Canal at Staveley is being filled with water and will be ready in early January.

The Staveley Town Basin project also involves creating a new trail and parking area.

The county council and the East Midlands Development Agency provided the funding for the project, which started in February.

"The mooring for the boats will be ready soon, providing a terminal for canal boats which we didn't have before, so it will become a really valuable asset," Councillor John Allsop said.

The Staveley Town Basin project has been given about £75,000 by the council and £500,000 by the development agency.
