A £28m cycling track and concert venue in Derby has been given planning permission.

The 5,000 seat centre, which would be able to host other sports, will be built on land next to Pride Park stadium.

The city council's planning committee unanimously approved the velodrome scheme, describing it as "stunning".

Work is expected to start in the summer with the facility opening early in 2014.

Once complete, the facility will also feature a gym, function rooms, badminton and basketball courts and a cafe.

The city council said it had already started to take bookings for the development.
