New Year Honours: Geoff Miller appointed OBE

Former national selector for the England cricket team Geoff Miller has been appointed OBE.

Mr Miller, from Derbyshire, retired in October after a seven-year period which included three Ashes triumphs and saw England top the Test cricket rankings.

The 61-year-old from Chesterfield was honoured for services to cricket.

Former county council leader Andrew Lewer, who has been appointed MBE, was among other Derbyshire recipients in the New Year Honours list.

Mr Lewer, 42, was elected to Derbyshire County Council in 2005.

Labour took over the authority in May but Mr Lewer, who has been honoured for services to local government, retained his Ashbourne seat.

The England and Wales Cricket Board said Mr Miller had announced his intention to step down from his role during the summer's Ashes win against Australia.

He joined the England selection panel in 2000, before replacing David Graveney as chairman of selectors eight years later.
