A teenager has been killed by a train while being followed by police in Derbyshire.

The 16-year-old, named locally as Mitchell Rodgers, was hit by a passing train near Belper railway station on Saturday night, and died at the scene.

Det Ch Insp Julian Wilson said officers had spoken to the teenager beforehand and followed him "from a distance away".

The force has informed the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

"We don't believe it was a deliberate act. We are investigating it as a tragic accident," Mr Wilson said.

Police confirmed the teenager was a pupil at the John Flamsteed Community School in Denby.

A file is being prepared for the coroner.
