The RSPCA is appealing for information after seven kittens were found abandoned in a cat carrier in Derby.

The five-week-old black and white kittens, six males and one female, were discovered without food and water near Pear Tree Street on Sunday.

A former RSPCA inspector has agreed to look after the animals until they are "strong enough" to go into a rehoming centre.

They were described as being in good health - and "very playful".

RSPCA inspector Ann Bennett said: "Thankfully a member of the public heard their cries and found them.

"They must have been so frightened being without their mum and they didn't have much space either in the cat carrier.

"We know times are tough at the moment and the cost of living is really affecting families who are struggling with their pets and the costs that come with them.

"But we ask for people not to abandon and dump these animals - but to seek help from charities and organisations out there."
