A village road has been forced to close for emergency repair work after a water main burst, causing severe damage.

Part of the B5035 Main Road, near Hindersitch Lane, in Whatstandwell, Derbyshire, shut on Wednesday.

Severn Trent said its team was carrying out "essential work" and hoped to have the problem fixed as soon as possible.

Derbyshire County Council said the section would be "completely rebuilt" due to the "extensive" damage, adding diversions have been put in place.

The authority said the burst water main "severely damaged the road, forcing a temporary, emergency closure".

"The road will need to be completely rebuilt by Severn Trent, once they have repaired their pipework, as the water has washed away the foundations, causing major subsidence," a spokesperson said.

"We are working with Severn Trent to confirm the likely timescales involved for the work to be done."

'Inconvenience'

The diversion route for smaller vehicles will be along the A6 to the A610, and then Bullbridge Hill back to Crich.

Larger vehicles will use the A61 to Chesterfield, A632 to Matlock and the A6 Crich.

A Severn Trent spokesperson added: "Traffic management is in place to make sure that the burst pipe can be fixed as quickly, and safely as possible.

"We understand this can be an inconvenience so want to thank everyone for their patience."
