Snow causes transport disruption across East Midlands

A number of HGVs got into difficulty on the M1 overnight

Snow falling overnight has caused disruption for transport and events across the East Midlands.

The runway at East Midlands Airport was closed at about 08:00 GMT but it was reopened about an hour later.

Police in the region said they had helped drivers, including several HGVs that got stuck on the M1.

Chesterfield Football Club appealed for supporters to help clear its pitch to enable the team's FA Cup tie against Leyton Orient to go ahead.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been partially extended - for icy conditions - until midday Monday.

This means a probability of icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths and potential for injury from slips and falls.

Derbyshire County Council said around 3-4 ins (7.5-10 cm) of snow fell overnight.

It said most routes were passable but A6187 Winnats Pass in Castleton in the Peak District was closed due to a vehicle becoming stuck.

Chesterfield FC successfully appealed on X, formerly Twitter, for help to keep the match on schedule.

"Snow has fallen onto the SMH Group Stadium pitch and we're looking for volunteers to help clear it as soon as possible," it said.

"If you can assist, please head to the South West corner of the stadium ASAP.

"Please bring your own shovel if you can - any help would be appreciated."

A spokesman for East Midlands Airport said: "Due to snow our runway is temporarily closed. Our teams are working hard to clear it and appreciate your patience as we work to resume normal operations as soon as possible."

It also advised travellers to check with the airlines for the latest information on specific flights.

Nottingham City Transport said a large number of bus services had been suspended due to the weather.

It added those still running were often subject to diversions.

Nottinghamshire Police said it was at the scene of a serious road traffic collision at the junction of the A610 and Farrington Way in Eastwood.

It is not clear whether this was related to the weather but while the road remains open in both directions, drivers have been told to travel with caution at the junction.

Transport police reported helping National Highways officers clearing stranded vehicles stuck between J28 and J27 M1 South.

They said it took around an hour to clear the majority of vehicles.

Leicestershire County Council said its gritters had treated 17 major routes twice overnight but the fire service issued a warning for drivers to take care on untreated roads.
