The council is considering potential sites for a new leisure centre to replace the Greenbank complex

A new leisure centre and council office could be built in a Derbyshire town.

South Derbyshire District Council said the 1970s-built Greenbank Leisure Centre and Civic Offices, in Swadlincote, were "becoming unfit" for purpose.

The authority said it was not environmentally-friendly and needed substantial future investment.

Plans are now being drawn up to replace the buildings, in Civic Way, with more modern facilities.

Residents are to be consulted on proposals as they emerge

A team has been set up by the council to find potential sites for new developments.

No decisions about the project have been made yet and no budget has been established, the council said.

Council leader Robert Pearson said: "It is of paramount importance that we ensure residents and our staff have access to modern buildings and facilities that truly serve their needs well into the future."

He said residents and staff would be consulted on plans as they emerge.
