A man who died after a van struck a group of people in a town centre has been named by police.

Derbyshire Constabulary said Samuel Wilson, from Long Eaton, and two other men were hit in Market Place, Ilkeston, at about 02:10 GMT on Saturday.

The force said "despite attempts to save him", the 26-year-old died at the scene. The other men were taken to hospital and have now been discharged.

A 27-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder remains in police custody.

A force representative said a "large scene" was in place throughout Saturday on Market Place, but the area "reopened yesterday evening".

"Police patrols are continuing in the area, and we would encourage anyone who may have any concerns to speak to our officers," they added.

Det Ch Insp Matt Croome said there was "a team of officers working to establish the events of that night, which has included viewing CCTV footage from around the Market Place that night".

Thanking all those "who have come forward and spoken to us", he said officers still wanted to "hear from anyone who may have witnessed or have any information about reports of an altercation at The Market Inn shortly before the incident".

"Any information you have could be vital to our investigation," he added.
