The old workshop building will be demolished

An unusual-looking Derby building described as "very ugly" and "lop-sided" is to be demolished.

Derby City Council has approved plans to knock down the workshop building in North Street and replace it with a new four-bedroom property.

A total of 16 objections were made at a planning committee meeting about the proposal on Thursday.

Complaints included concern surrounding the number of houses of multiple occupation in the area.

Locksley Nottingham Limited, who want the new build to be used by multiple occupants, submitted the plans for the site in November 2022.

Planning documents state the new building will be designed to have a traditional Victorian character and appearance to suit the Strutts Park conservation area, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

It will also be "car free" meaning occupants will not be able to get a resident's parking permit once the home is built.

Councillor Sara Bolton said: "I think I would support this application. My thoughts are that it would improve the street scene for the residents and give housing to people who are perhaps inadequately housed."

Councillor Martin Rawson said: "I agree with Councillor Bolton's comments on this application. It was previously a workshop so I think it is appropriate to bring it back to residential use, which is more in keeping with its surroundings."

Councillor Lucy Care added: "I think the roof is interesting with its lop-sided aspect."

Seven councillors voted in favour of the proposal, meaning the planning application was approved.
