Rescue teams and an air ambulance were called to a Peak District beauty spot after a child fell between rocks and suffered serious injuries.

The incident was one of a number of callouts received by the Edale Mountain Rescue Team on Monday.

Rescue workers were also called to Stanage Edge, north of Hathersage, in the Hope Valley, after a climber suffered a 19ft (6m) fall.

A spokesperson for the mountain rescue team said: "It's been quite a day."

The Edale team was called to Stanage Edge at 15:11 GMT on Monday after the climber fell 6m at the popular walking site.

The climber suffered a "very nasty broken arm" and was given pain relief before being carried on a stretcher to Hooks Carr car park, from where they were taken to Sheffield Northern General Hospital for treatment.

While the mountain rescue team was at the scene, a call came in at 15:22 after a young boy fell between rocks and "immediately cried out in pain". The incident happened close to Robin Hood's Cave, also near Stanage Edge.

A spokesperson for the team said: "Team members along with two of our team doctors were soon on scene and began treating the little boy, while other team members comforted the child's mother.

"He had suffered some quite serious injuries to his head and abdomen, and his conscious levels were fluctuating."

Members of the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team were also called to the scene, while the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance supported doctors with the child's care.

After treatment at the scene, the boy was taken to Sheffield Children's Hospital by land ambulance for further treatment.

Rescuers were also called at 16:07 on Monday to Castleton, where a walker fell at Cavedale. They were given pain relief before being taken to hospital for treatment.
