Watch: Time-lapse of northern lights over town

An amateur photographer has captured time-lapse footage of the northern lights shimmering over his home town.

Craig Kenny recorded the footage overlooking Glossop, Derbyshire, on Sunday night.

Mr Kenny, who had never seen the northern lights before, said he did not expect to capture them above his home town.

"I saw on social media there might be an appearance all over the UK," he said.

"When I got home to check the footage I was very surprised and happy to see the outcome."

The aurora was visible from the Scottish Highlands down to Cornwall on Sunday night due to an ongoing solar storm.
