Derby: Safety improvements planned for busy city road
- Published
A key route in and out of Derby will see work to install safety features begin this spring.
Derby City Council is finalising the details of a major scheme for parts of Ashbourne Road, which connects Markeaton Island and the city centre.
The exact dates work will take place are also yet to be set.
The changes along the road will help "reduce injury collisions and improve active travel", according to the council.
Last year the council was awarded £475,000 from the Government Road Safety Fund for the changes, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
A public consultation, external on the project was held last year, but the council says final decisions about the design and location of improvements are still to be made.
During the consultation, proposals for safety improvements included:
Widening of the existing pedestrian crossing near Kniveton Close and Windmill Hill Lane
Widening the pavement at the Noel Street junction to improve visibility, protect parking and create an additional parking space, upgrading the existing pedestrian crossing to a toucan crossing, allowing cyclists to use it, and installing a speed hump
Moving the existing bus shelter between Colvile Street and Shaw Street to widen the pavement
Widening the pavement between Shaw Street and Merchant Street
Installing speed humps at Mill Street and Bridge Street, widening the pavement at Agard Street for shared cycle and pedestrian use, and widening the pedestrian crossing at Agard Street
Installing speed humps at Vernon Street and Larges Street junctions, improving signs and painting lines to highlight National Cycle Route 54/68, and installing a cycle lane
