A range of money-saving measures look set to be introduced

The opening hours of Derbyshire's tips look set to be reduced as part of a range of money-saving measures.

Charges to dispose of tyres and asbestos, and only allowing county residents in, are also part of the plans, which Derbyshire County Council hopes will save half a million pounds a year.

The council runs nine household waste and recycling sites.

If approved, opening hours at all nine centres would reduce.

This would mean operating times at Ashbourne, Bolsover, Buxton, Chesterfield, Darley Dale, Glossop, Ilkeston, Loscoe, and Newhall would be from 09:30 to 17:00 instead of the existing 08:30 to 18:00 arrangement.

This would save in the region of £261,000 a year, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

Meanwhile, it is looking to charge £4 for each car tyre and £6 for each asbestos sheet, aiming to bring in a further £69,000 per year.

Currently neighbouring counties such as Staffordshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire either charge or do not accept these, the LDRS said.

Charging small businesses such as sole traders to deposit waste, at a cost, will also be trialled in Ashbourne and Bolsover, with an aim to bring in £40,000 through the pilot.

The council also plans to bring in automatic number plate recognition cameras to ensure that only pre-registered Derbyshire residents would be allowed to use the county's tips.

The proposed changes will be voted on by the cabinet on Thursday, with the matter to then pass to full council for final sign-off.
