An inquest has opened for a young farmer who was shot dead in a field.

Charles Kinston, 23, was found with fatal injuries on land off Brizlincote Lane, Bretby, Derbyshire, on 29 January.

Proceedings were opened at Derby Coroner's Court on Thursday, with the initial cause of death given as a gunshot wound to the chest.

The inquest was adjourned to a later date while a murder investigation opened by Derbyshire Police continues.

Mr Kinston was identified by his father John Kinston at the mortuary of the Royal Derby Hospital on 1 February, the hearing was told.

'Much-loved character'

Derbyshire Police said officers were called to the scene at about 18:30 GMT and arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of murder. He was later released on bail as inquiries continue.

The force said the two individuals were known to each other and officers had "mitigated any risk to the wider public".

On Friday a spokesperson said they were unable to comment further on the ongoing investigation.

Leicestershire Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs described Mr Kinston, who was a member of Netherseal YFC for more than 12 years, as a "kind and generous character".

A spokeswoman said the organisation was "devastated" at the news of his death and offered "deepest condolences" to his family.

She added: "He was a much-loved, kind and generous character who knew how to make everyone laugh."
