A device thought to be an unexploded mortar round has been detonated in a Derbyshire field.

Explosive experts were called to a site in the Langley Avenue area of Cotmanhay, near Ilkeston, at about 18:40 GMT on Sunday.

Derbyshire Police said the device was found on grassland by a member of the public.

A number of homes were evacuated while a controlled explosion took place at 22:40, the force said.

Officers said they wanted to reassure people living nearby who heard a loud bang that there was no reason to be alarmed.
