Plans to demolish part of a former market to make way for a new "innovative and eye-catching" frontage have been submitted.

Derby's Eagle Market could be given a new face with the designs, which were submitted by applicant Lichfields.

The new facade is set to feature a "dynamic" kinetic frontage - a wall with freely-moving features.

Papers show the plans are part of the wider Eastern Gateway project aimed at transforming Derby city centre.

Lichfields said the latest designs would see the demolition of the existing Eagle Market facade and the nearby Castle and Falcon pub to create space for a new frontage.

An external landscaped market square is also proposed in East Street, creating "a sense of arrival for visitors".

The applicants said the new plans had been discussed with Derby City Council and would form part of the authority's Eastern Gateway project, which is aiming to create a welcoming arrival to the city from the bus station.

The plans do not address the future usage of the building, which closed in 2023.

However, they suggest separate plans to convert the building into an entertainment hub - which were approved in 2023 - may not go ahead.

Interest from developers in the previous scheme had since "fallen away", the company said.

The application would overlap with plans submitted by Derbion, which could see the demolition of Derby Theatre and 875 new homes built in 11 high-rise blocks, the applicants said.

Councillors will review the plans before deciding to approve or reject them at a later date.
