Chesterfield celebrate promotion

A parade through Chesterfield could be held to mark the Spireites return to league football.

Chesterfield FC's promotion back to the English Football League, and the National League title, was secured as they beat Boreham Wood 3-0 last weekend.

In three previous seasons, the club missed out on promotion after play-off heartbreak.

Now, the club and Chesterfield Borough Council are in discussions.

They want to arrange a way for fans to formally celebrate the team taking matters into their own hands with five games to spare.

A parade and town hall reception are both on the cards, club chairman Mike Goodwin told the BBC.

He said: "We have had those conversations with the borough council.

"They want to honour the football club. They want to put a parade on and a reception for us at the town hall.

"Those plans are being put in place as we speak now so over the next few days we should have something sorted for that."

Councillor Tricia Gilby, leader of the council, said: "My congratulations to Chesterfield FC on their promotion back into the EFL. It is great for the club and for their loyal band of supporters and also great for the town and the borough.

"A successful football club is a vital part of Chesterfield's economy.

"The players' lifting of the National League trophy justifies the council's decision to support the Community Trust in acquiring Chesterfield FC, and the trust and its board of directors, alongside Paul Cook, the coaching staff and players, have done a fantastic job in navigating the club's path back to where it rightly belongs.

"The council intends to mark Chesterfield FC's success with an official celebration event.

"We are currently working with the club on the arrangements and will make the details public in the coming days.

"It should be another brilliant occasion for the club and the town."
