A celebration of English culture will take place in Derby ahead of St George's Day.

Free events are to be held across the city centre on Saturday before the patron saint's day on Tuesday.

The programme has been drawn up to highlight English heritage and culture "in all its eccentricities", organisers said.

Events are due to take place at St Peter's Cross and the Market Place between 12:00 BST and 14:00.

Visitors to the free event can train to be knights, play medieval games, take part in arts and crafts workshops, enjoy puppet shows and see theatrical retellings of the story of St George.

The event has been organised by Derby Live, The Lost Boys theatre company and Derby BID.

City councillor Nadine Peatfield said: "As ever, Derby is proud to celebrate St George's Day with a whole host of family-friendly activities that will bring the story of our patron saint to life.

"We're delighted to have such a vibrant mix of groups and performers taking part in what is sure to be an excellent event."
