A man is in a critical condition following a crash which shut a Derbyshire dual carriageway for several hours.

Just after 06:00 BST on Monday, emergency services were called to the A38 northbound between Burton-upon-Trent and Derby.

A silver Vauxhall Corsa had left the road and crashed into trees between Willington and Toyota Island.

The collision left the driver, a man in his 20s, badly injured.

No other vehicles were involved, say Derbyshire Police.

A spokesman for the force said: "The driver was seriously injured and taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition."

They added that the section of road was closed for a number of hours while collision investigation work and vehicle recovery took place.
