A road in Derbyshire has been closed to drivers after a vehicle brought in to help repair the stretch broke down and needed fixing itself.

Overnight closures were planned from 7 to 9 May in Alfreton Road in Codnor for resurfacing work.

On the first night of the works a planer was brought in to strip the road surface.

But the hefty machine suffered an issue and now needs repairs itself before work can continue.

Derbyshire County Council has apologised for the unscheduled road closure and says technicians are working to get the machinery up and running once more.

It is expected the works, just off the A610, will now overrun by a day.

The council said: "We are sorry that Alfreton Road in Codnor is closed today. This is because while we were working there last night the planer, the large machine that takes the top road surface off broke down and is blocking the road.

"There are people on site who are fixing the planer so that hopefully work can continue tonight.

"This does mean that the road will remain closed each night until Friday to get this job finished. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience."
