Police were called to Chatsworth Road, in Chesterfield, on Monday evening

Two men have been arrested after a road in a Derbyshire town was closed due to a chemical spill.

The spill occurred on the A619 Chatsworth Road in Chesterfield just before 16:30 BST on Monday.

Several properties were evacuated and the road was shut while emergency services attended the scene.

Derbyshire Police said two men, in their 30s, had been arrested on suspicion of using a noxious substance to cause damage.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters wearing breathing apparatus covered the substance with dry kiln sand and contained the spillage using an oversized drum.

Following a preliminary investigation, the substance is believed to have contained hydrochloric acid.

A police spokesperson said no-one was injured and that no lasting damage appears to have been caused.

"We are investigating the possibility that the incident may have been deliberate, but inquiries are ongoing," they said.

"We do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the wider public."
